Lollapalooza was launched as a touring festival in 1991 by Perry Farrell to bid farewell to his band Jane’s Addiction, but continued after the band’s breakup. With a focus on alternative rock bands such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phish, and Pearl Jam, the Lollapalooza festival quickly became one of the biggest festivals of the time. However, the fun was not to last. With the decline of alternative rock toward the end of the ’90s, Lolla began having trouble finding headliners. This problem doomed the 1998 festival to cancellation.
The festival was seemingly history until 2003, when Farrell revived it. Jane’s Addiction was also back, and it joined more than two dozen other bands on tour. The festival was only moderately successful that year, but in 2004 could not sell enough tickets, and was canceled again. Lollapalooza was restructured as a single site festival at Grant Park, and in 2005 began to recover its status as a top festival. In 2016, Lollapalooza is set to take place from July 28 – 31 once again in Chicago’s Grant Park.
