Kiss Biography

Kiss was formed in 1972 when lead vocalists Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley recruited Peter Criss as the band’s drummer and Ace Frehley as their lead guitarist. Kiss’ self-titled debut album was released in 1974. However, it was not until the band’s third album, Dressed To Kill, that Kiss dropped into the top 50 on the charts, peaking at #32. Dressed began Kiss’ rise to superstardom, but their next album, Alive!, cemented it. A live album, it gave the band their first Top 10 record as well as their first hit single, “Rock and Roll All Nite.”

The following several years saw the band become very successful. Albums such as Destroyer, Rock and Roll Over, Alive II, Love Gun, and Dynasty all reached the Top 10. The albums spawned several popular singles, including “Beth” (#7), “Hard Luck Woman” (#15), “Calling Dr. Love” (#16), and “I Was Made for Lovin’ You” (#11). However, their good fortune was not to last. A poorly executed attempt to release solo albums simultaneously, along with rising tensions among the band members (leading to a high turnover in just a few years) threw Kiss into the proverbial wilderness for the first half of the 1980s. As a way to renew their success, the members shed their trademark makeup in 1983. The plan worked; when released later in the year, Lick It Up became Kiss’ first platinum album since 1979’s Dynasty.

The resurgence of the band continued with the next three albums Animalize, Asylum, and Crazy Nights. Additionally, they co-released “Forever” with Michael Bolton on 1989’s Hot in the Shade, and it became their most successful single since “Beth.” Among the band’s recent albums, 1992’s Revenge and 1998’s Psycho Circus have peaked at #6 and #3 respectively. In 1996, the band reintroduced the classic makeup, and since 2004 the lineup of Simmons, Stanley, Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer have produced several tours, including Kiss Alive/35 and the Hottest Show on Earth tour.
