About Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez was born on July 24, 1969 in The Bronx, NY. At the age of five, Lopez’s parents enrolled her in singing and dancing lessons, and by age seven she traveled around New York City with her school putting on shows. Along with performing with her school, her parents encouraged Lopez along with her two sisters to put on singing and dancing performances at home.
During Lopez’s senior year of high school, she auditioned and was cast in the low budget film, My Little Girl in 1986. After she was featured in the film she decided that acting was something she wanted to purse professionally. After dropping out of college during her first semester, Lopez moved to Manhattan and performed in regional renditions of Jesus Christ Superstar and Oklahoma. In 1991, after performance stints in Europe and Japan, Lopez was hired as a backup dancer for New Kids on the Block and soon after became a Fly Girl dancer on In Living Color.
After acquiring rolls in a handful of films throughout the early and mid ’90s, Lopez finally got her big break when she starred in the 1997 film Selena, a film about the late singer of the same name. The film grossed $60 million in the box office and Lopez won multiple awards for her role as Selena.
Already an established actress by the late ’90s, Lopez began work on her debut album, which was a surprise to many of her fans. Lopez acknowledges she was only given a record deal because of her looks and successful acting career. However, she wanted to prove she had musical talent. Her debut single, “If You Had My Love” was released in May 1999. The song quickly became the top song on the Billboard Hot 100, a rare feat for anyone’s first single. Her debut album, On the 6 was released soon after on June 1, 1999 and peaked at the number eight spot on the U.S. Billboard 200.
In 2001, Lopez released her second studio album, J. Lo, which peaked at the number one spot on the U.S. Billboard 200. The album was released the same week as the film The Wedding Planner, in which Lopez starred alongside Matthew McConaughey. Lopez became the first entertainer to have both a number one film and album simultaneously. The album, which included the singles “Love Don’t Cost a Thing,” “Play,” and “Ain’t It Funny,” would go on to be certified quadruple platinum by the end of 2001.
Throughout the last decade, Lopez has continued to release albums, as well as star in movies, including Monster-in-Law and Ice Age: Continental Drift. Lopez’s most recent album, A.K.A. was released in June 2014 and featured hit songs “I Luh Ya Papi” and “First Love.” In 2016, Lopez will begin a residency at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Lopez will perform 10 shows in January and February 2016 and 10 more in May and June of 2016.
